Smiley face spotted in the sky after mystery airman uses his vapour trail to 'draw an emoticon'

A mystery airman who 'paints' smiley faces in the sky using his light aircraft has struck again.

The unknown aviator often delights Cambridge residents by using vapour trails to create emoticons above their heads.

And he struck again at the weekend by creating his trademark symbol above the city's historic centre.

Mark Pickering, 57, said he grinned as he took photos of the happy go lucky pilot's aerial signature from a hotel rooftop on Saturday.

He said: "I literally looked and saw the pilot doing it.

"I put a smile on my face, I just thought it was quite funny.

"It didn't last long at all. As soon as he finished I took the photo and within a couple of minutes it disappeared.

"It was one of those things I just couldn't believe, you just had to be the at the right time and the right place.

"Friends and I were just sitting on the on the roof and we were just finishing - it was the perfect afternoon."

Will Peters, 22, from Cambridge, rushed downstairs when his mother told him the 'smiley face' pilot had taken to the skies again.

Will, who lives near Cambridge City Airport, said: "He's a bit of legend in the area.
