Spurs fans given police escort in mad dash from airport as flight lands just 30-minutes before Champ

TOTTENHAM fans were given a police escort from their plane to the terminal in a mad rush to make it in time to watch the Champions League final against Liverpool.

Hundreds of Spurs fans were hit with a Champions League final disaster after a bird hit a Thomas Cook plane and delayed their flight to Madrid.

The unfortunate supporters were stranded at Stansted Airport for six and a half hours.

However, BBC Sport's Ben Gallop posted on Twitter a picture as he and Spurs fans were given a police escort from the plane to the terminal in order to get to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium for kick off.

They arrived just 30 minutes before kick off and were helped by airport staff and police to speed up their route to the stadium.

Although the fans did not make it in time to watch the game kick off, they arrived 15 minutes into the game.

Further fan frustration emerged as it was reported supporters with genuine tickets were turned away at Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid just minutes before kick-off.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL NIGHTMARE

Thomas Cook confirmed that one of its six planes scheduled to fly to Madrid today had suffered a "bird strike".

And it sourced an alternative plane from Manchester to take the remaining fans to Spain on time.

The replacement aircraft was scheduled to leave Stansted at 4:30pm and land in Madrid at 7:30pm local time.

Such an itinerary would leave the passengers with just an hour and a half to get to Wanda Metropolitano on time for the start of the Champions League final.

But apparently, having boarded the replacement plane, they were then asked to get off the aircraft and were still waiting at the tarmac at 5:20pm.

The travel company claims that, following the incident, the aircraft was "deemed not safe to operate".
